SALT:
Karen Blixen wrote: “The cure for anything can be found in salt water; sweat, tears, and the sea.” The value of sweat and sea are straightforward: ‘sweat’, the catharsis in moving your body, or laboring for something worthy of your effort, taking action. ‘Sea’: in a literal sense, the healing properties from immersion in water are as old as civilization. And in an existential sense, to borrow from another famous lady of literature: “What are men to rocks and mountains?” Outdoor enthusiasts know well: great perspective can be found simply by being present in nature.
But in my work as a therapist I often find our valuation of tears- or feelings in general- to be more complicated for one reason or another. When it comes to our emotional well-being, there is no substitute for a collaborative therapeutic relationship. Participating in mental health therapy allows us the ability to identify, explore, exist in, and ultimately move through our feelings with intention and understanding. In therapy, we have the opportunity to share our stories without fear of judgment and with every expectation of unconditional positive regard. And to quote Blixen once more, “All sorrows can be borne if we put them into a story.”
SHORE:
My last name (Beckstrand) is in-part derived from the Swedish word for ‘shore’. Sometimes, we feel we’re drowning and looking for solid ground. And sometimes, we find ourselves stuck aground, and looking for movement and change. Shore is that space where land and water- groundedness and fluidity- meet. Wherever you find yourself, I’ve created this practice to be that ‘space between’: to meet you where you are, to take a look at where you came from, and to help you in the direction of where you’re going, without judgment, and with unconditional positive regard.
About Lexie
I’m Lexie Beckstrand, a licensed mental health professional (LPC) in D.C. and Virginia. I graduated from Marymount University in 2020, and have over six years of clinical experience. I completed my residency at Over the Rainbow, LLC- a private practice in the D.C., Maryland, Virginia region which specializes in mental health care for first responders.
I work primarily as an individual therapist for adults. I have worked in tandem with my clients through many stressors, including anxiety, grief, depression, Post-Traumatic and Acute Stress, adjustment to significant life-changes, domestic abuse, challenging and/or unhealthy family dynamics, couples issues, exploration of gender and sexuality, and crisis management. I feel strongly about incorporating evidence-based interventions in my practice, and use cognitive behavioral therapy techniques as a supplement to my psychodynamic and client-centered approach to therapy.
I am a Boren Fellowship recipient, and have previously studied and worked in Jordan, Türkiye, and Azerbaijan. Outside of work, I study Turkish and am a proud dog-owner to a very sweet street pup I met while in Istanbul. His name is Rooster.
